Book Review: Country Girls

Book Review by Toni G. Sinns

Book Title: Country Girls

Author: Karina Gioertz

About the Author: Karina began writing as a child. Early on it was mostly poetry and short stories, but by the time she was a teenager she was pulled towards writing screenplays. In her twenties she spent some time studying creative writing and continued working on her poetry, some of which was published at the time.

In addition to that, she spent many years studying acting and taking voice lessons, which led to extensive experience in all aspects of Community Theater. Since then, Karina has self-published several books and has also become an avid blogger in addition to continued focus on screenwriting.

Although she has been writing for most of her life, it never quite registered with her as something out of the ordinary or worth pursuing, because it was so closely connected to who she was. Instead, she focused on her singing and acting because the draw to that industry had always been there. In the end Karina realized that she never quite enjoyed 'being in' the story as much as she enjoyed 'telling' the story. Karina is not a writer because it's the only thing she's good at, or it's the only thing she knows how to do... Karina is a writer because it's the only thing she doesn't know how NOT to do.

While writing has become her main focus over the years, she also enjoys many other creative activities such as painting and photography. Most sunny days she can be found in her courtyard working feverishly at painting and refurbishing old furniture...that is, of course, only if it wasn't a suitable day to spend at the beach ;)

Book Description: “Country Girls” It had been clear from the beginning, that Emma, Eli and Evey Wilson would be tied together by more than just a name and the blood that flowed through each of their veins. They would be bound for life by the secrets of their past and the lies that kept them hidden. After a fire devoured their family home and left them orphaned at an early age, Emma, Eli and Evey found themselves being raised by their grandfather and learning the ropes of life on the ranch. A life that quite suited Emma and Eli, but left Evey desperate to seek out a way to escape and run off to the big city. An escape she soon found in Preston Mercer. It wasn’t long after Evey rode out of town on Preston’s white horse that he revealed his true colors and what had been her dream come true became the stuff of nightmares. While Evey weathered the storm on her own at first, out of spite and sheer stubbornness, she finally broke her silence and called her sisters. They instantly rushed to her side, just as they had always done. Just as she had known they would. As Pandora’s Box was opened for the second time in 25 years, the sisters prepared for what would be their greatest battle yet. Would Evey be able to escape Preston’s wrath? Would Emma be able to face the monsters of her past? Would Eli find a way to heal the scars that had not only bound her body but shackled her very soul? And, most importantly, would there be room amongst the skeletons to hide another body? Join them on their journey, as they fight the enemy, embrace the ally and find out if love really does conquer all.

My Review

Story Line: At an early age and a life changing event puts three sisters alone together with a grandfather they didn’t really know well. Growing up they continued to stay close until Prince charming came to save one from the hardship of the country life. Distance seems to fall between the two girls staying together and the one far away. However, when prince charming starts to show his true colors the sisters are quick to return to each other’s side. After another life changing event it seems the sisters have to lean on each other again to come out of the crazy adventure that lay before them.

Characters: Eli, Emma, Evey, Harry, Brady, Shawn, Preston

My Favorite Character:  Eli Wilson with her strong will and attitude to match. She doesn’t need a man and she doesn’t need the town’s gossip about her either. Always ready to stand up for herself and isn’t afraid of the outcome.

My Favorite Part: It is really hard to pick just one. I guess one of them I’ll tell you about is the bar fight. Eli gets her mouth going and starts in on one of the local gossip kings. Before long the guy is insulting Eli and Emma comes to stand up for her sister as well. It just shows how much of a pack these sisters have. Any moment they need to be there and they are. Just like when Evey calls and Emma and Eli don’t miss a beat to go to her even with the long drive. It shows that even after time and distance that you can’t stop the power of family and love. It also shows that siblings are always there when you need them.

Full Concept: Maybe I am a bit bias being a country girl myself but that put aside this book still is a great read. The country life is full of blood, sweat, tears, hard work and quick on your feet problem solving and this book has it all.

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 stars.  From the tragic on page one to the end I was captivated by this book, asking questions, wanting answers and pulling for things to turn out. I will definitely be recommending this book to my friends and can’t wait to read more from this author.
